The task might seem like a rudimentary one, but knowing how much air is in your tired and when it’s time to put more in is an essential skill to have for any driver. The last thing you want is to get caught with a flat or a blowout. And, even if this is a refresher course for you, there’s certainly a lot you can benefit from.

The Eye Can Deceive You

Unless the structural integrity of your tires is obvious, such as blown out or completely flat, you can’t judge your tire’s current level of air on looks alone. To determine the PSI (pounds per square inch), you’ll need a tire gauge. They’re relatively inexpensive and quite easy to use. In order to get an accurate reading, many experts advise that you wait until your tires are cold. Pressure tends to build up during the summer heat, and measuring them before they’ve cooled off can give you an inaccurate reading. It’s important that you check your tires before leaving in the morning and that the PSI rating matches what’s in your vehicle’s owner’s manual.

How to Properly Check Your Tires

  • Make sure your car is at a level surface or in the shade and that the tires are not too warm.
  • Remove the valve caps that cover the stems.
  • Firmly press the tire gauge into the valve for a brief moment.
  • The gauge will then give a PSI rating. If the number seems wildly inaccurate, give it a second reading to ensure that it’s the right one. If the PSI is over the limit, release some of the air in the tires to lower the rating until it matches the recommended range. If the PSI is too low, fill the tire with the help of an air compressor.
  • Once the air is in the tire, give it a second reading to ensure that the right amount is in the tire. Replace the valve caps.

Note: If you don’t have an air compressor, you can usually get air at a gas station. However, never drive if your tire is completely flat; you can cause permanent damage to the wheel.
